Six Nations Preview

If you’re a keen rugby fan, the chances are that you know of and may even be planning on tuning into the Six Nations Championship. This annual competition draws a great deal of attention – and for good reason!

As the name of the tournament suggests, six nations lock horns in what’s arguably the most important event on the rugby union calendar. It’s a fantastic opportunity to cheer on your nation’s favourite rugger stars as they battle it out in an almost Herculean event of mud, tears and occasional injuries!

Although the term ‘Six Nations’ is still relatively young, the championship itself is more than a century old. It began as the Home Nations Championship in 1883 between the four nations of the UK (Wales, England, Scotland, and Ireland). Then, in 1910, the championship became the Five Nations, adding France as a new opponent. 90 years later, in the year 2000, Italy joined in the fun – and union fans know that their addition was well worth the wait!

Of course, there are plenty of other rugby union betting events to look forward to – but for now, let’s focus on the annual tournament that matters the most.

Who Plays in the Rugby Six Nations, and When?

The six nations involved in the self-titled championship are England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France and Italy.

Since all nations play each other at least once in the tournament, there are 15 matches in total. Scoring is much the same as you’d expect from a standard championship – it’s typically four points when you win, two when you draw, and zero when you lose.

The Six Nations rugby championship takes place every February to end by the close of March. This tends to be the same every year – so make sure to mark your calendar if you’d like to get involved!

England in Six Nations Rugby

England are, at the time of writing, the most successful team in Six Nations history. They’ve accrued 29 outright wins and 10 shared wins in total – but Wales are closing the gap (more on them shortly).

England usually play their home matches at Twickenham Stadium, and their current captain is Jamie George – under the watchful eye of the head coach, Steve Borthwick. England’s best-ever scorer is Owen Farrell, who has helped claim over 1,200 points over the years. Interestingly, his father is Andy Farrell, currently the head coach of the Irish side!

Wales in Six Nations Rugby

If anyone’s challenging England for the title of top Six Nations side, Wales are forcing the closest contest. At the time of writing, the Welsh side have claimed 28 wins and 11 shared victories. This means that they technically have the same number of wins as England, but one fewer outright championship. It’s fair to say that they’ll be pulling out the stops this year. The Welsh national side are managed by Warren Gatland, with Dafydd Jenkins playing as captain. The side’s top scorer is the legendary Neil Jenkins, who has helped the team score a total of 1,049 points over the years. They typically play at home at the Principality Stadium (previously called the Millennium Stadium) in Cardiff.

Scotland in Six Nations Rugby

Scotland’s rugby union team don’t pull any punches either. They’ve won the competition 14 times in total over the years. Playing home games at Murrayfield, the team will be co-captained by Rory Darge and Finn Russell. In general, the side’s top scorer is Chris Patterson, who has helped to claim 809 points for his national team over the years. At the time of writing, Gregor Townsend is Scotland’s head coach. Scotland are not always the outright favourite to win the Six Nations, and they’ve pulled off some upsets in the past. They always fight gallantly against the likes of England and Wales, and Ireland also in recent years.

Ireland in Six Nations Rugby

Ireland has everything to play for right now – they’re the reigning champions of the Six Nations Championship. The side represents the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland and are captained by Peter O’Mahony. Playing at the Aviva Stadium, Ireland have racked up 14 outright wins. They’re a force to be reckoned with, especially as they’re toe to toe with Scotland for championship wins. Could this be the year that either side breaks away?

Six Nations Rugby Betting Odds and Markets

At LeoVegas, we strive to provide you with some of the most diverse betting markets and the strongest odds available. You don’t have to bet on outright winners – why not try some in-play betting and take advantage of the latest twists in the games unfolding?

In the meantime, let’s take a look at some of the most popular Six Nations betting markets and odds opening up now – and run through what you might want to consider.

Outright Results Betting Outright results betting is among the most popular betting forms in the sport. This kind of betting allows you to place bets on your favourite team to win either in a specific match or the overall tournament. For example, you might place an outright results bet on England to win the whole Six Nations Championship. While outright betting is easily one of the simplest options available, it’s never a sure thing. In fact, it carries quite a bit of risk – you’ll sometimes get long odds on teams to win outright if you bet before the competition starts!

Top Try Scorer This kind of bet allows you to wager on a specific player from any given team in the whole tournament. You bet on that particular player to score more tries than anyone else playing – and you can do so per match or outright.

For example, you might bet on Theo Dan for England, Peato Mauvaka for France, or Tadhg Furlong for Ireland.

Different Nations Betting You don’t have to bet on just one side to win! If you’re patriotic, we understand that you’ll want to pick your home side – but you might find that there are longer odds available if you add another side to your betting slip.
