Details of the 2025 Women’s European Championship

  • Host Country: Switzerland
  • Dates: 2-27 July 2025

Favourites:

Spain and England are the big favourites to reach the Euro 2025 final and repeat their showdown from the World Cup two summers ago. England have arguably receded since then and head to Switzerland trying to rekindle their form. Spain have also floundered recently and failed to win Olympic gold as expected last summer.

The two other big favourites are eight-time European champions Germany and perennial runners-up France. The French, who are in England’s group, are yet to win the Euros or World Cup despite boasting one of the best domestic leagues on the planet.

Elsewhere, Denmark and Netherlands will see themselves as outsiders – particularly the Danes, who have neighbours Sweden in their group.

Wales and Poland will make their debuts at the Euros this summer. Wales beat Republic of Ireland 3-2 over two legs to reach the Euros, which included a 2-1 win in front of 25,800 fans in Dublin. Netherlands and Wales make up Group D alongside England and France, which is considered the Group of Death for Euro 2025.

Hosts Switzerland will look to get out of the group stages for the first time in their history – and the Euro 2025 odds suggest they have a chance. While two-time winners Norway are expected to win the group, Switzerland are second favourites and have a relatively friendly draw against Iceland and Finland. Second spot could be hotly contested. Switzerland drew 0-0 with Iceland in the Women’s Nations League in February and came close to stealing a point off Norway in Stavanger too.

Portugal have a poor record at the Women’s Euros and are way behind their Iberian neighbours in terms of their international set-up. They are tipped alongside Belgium to miss out on the top two spots in Group B, which should go to Spain and Italy. The Spanish are seeking to become world and European champions, and come into the tournament with the Luis Rubiales “kiss” trial hanging over the team. Spain’s recent results haven’t been as consistent as they were heading into the World Cup. Italy are also bang out of form. They drew with Spain last autumn but then lost 3-1 to Denmark in February. Group B is the hardest group to predict.

Group C

C4SwedenChampions3rd

Germany should sew Group C up within two games against Poland and Denmark. They are not the unbeatable force they were in the 2010s but remain a powerhouse. Germany beat Poland 5-1 in Euro 2025 qualifying and should head to Switzerland with good results from the Nations League behind them. Sweden are considered narrow favourites to finish second ahead of Denmark – but the Danes could spring a surprise here. Danish domestic football is thriving and the national team qualified for Euro 2025 as strong runners-up behind Spain in their group. Denmark vs Sweden opens the group on 4 July and is the big match to watch.

Group D

England are narrow favourites ahead of France to win Group D. It would be easy to assume both sides will saunter to the knockout stages – but then there's Netherlands to contend with. The Dutch held Germany 2-2 in February and came close to edging the USA before Christmas. Assuming Vivianne Miedema is fully fit, Netherlands will be a real danger in Group D. They could even top it. England face France in their opening match on 5 July, before a showdown with the Dutch. A final group game against Wales should deliver three points. Wiegman will hope they've already done enough by then to progress.

How will England perform at Euro 2025?

All eyes are on England in Group D, as defending European champions and World Cup finalists two years ago. The team has evolved, though, and it's as resilient as the one that delivered that famous night at Wembley. England have a tough group. France look to be in a great position to challenge for the championship, and beat the Lionesses 2-1 in Newcastle last year. The Dutch are a little harder to predict. It was a defeat in Utrecht in September 2023 that triggered England's post-World Cup slump, which resulted in Team GB not qualifying for the Olympics. While we can assume England will beat Wales, they're not guaranteed to escape this group. If they win Group D then a quarter-final with Denmark or Sweden most likely awaits, before a semi-final versus Spain. Come second and England could have a date with Germany to prepare for, before a semi-final with hosts Switzerland.

What teams are expected to perform well

There are two teams that could really impress at Euro 2025 and they’re not one of the four favourites to lift the trophy!

Italy

This could be a breakout tournament for the Italians, 28 years since the last reached the Euros final. They've bombed in the last two European Championships but drew to Spain and beat Germany in friendlies back in the autumn. Italy should advance from Group B in Spain's shadow but could then flourish in a quarter-final against Switzerland or Iceland. The semis are by no means beyond them.

Netherlands

The Dutch haven't suffered a really bad result since April 2024 and head into the Euros with an 'all or nothing' attitude. They know they're third favourites in Group D, behind England and France. Yet facing Wales first should put three points on the board. A draw in their final two group games could be enough to advance. Captain Sherida Spitse, Jackie Groenen and Jill Roord have more than 550 international caps between them. The Dutch have the experience – and talent in the form of Vivianne Miedema and Esmee Brugts – to cause a stir here.

What teams could cause upsets?

Euro 2025 is likely to produce a few shocks. We saw it in 2022 when Iceland drew with France and Sweden topped Group C. This summer there are two teams to keep an eye out, if you like betting on an underdog.

Denmark

If you're looking to bet on an upset at Euro 2025 then Denmark is the place to look. The Danes have some amazing attacking talent in Pernille Harder, Signe Bruun and the young Sofie Bredgaard. Defensively they are less reliable but that, in recent months, has led to some erratic results. If Denmark can escape Group C then they could cause England or France some trouble in the quarters.

Finland

Finland are the rank outsiders to win Euro 2025 and, while we don't think Marko Saloranta is going to deliver the shock of all shocks, it's certainly possible for them to escape Group A. Switzerland are a low-ranked top seed as hosts, while Iceland have endured some miserable results of late. Norway have found some form over the past year but have won just one Euro match in their last six since reaching the final in 2013. This is a great that could deliver an against-the-odds shock and see Finland into the quarters.

Who could end up at Club World Cup Top Goalscorer

The top scorer during Euro 2025 qualifying – Lara Prasnikar – scored nine goals for Slovenia but couldn't secure her country's place in Switzerland. Nor could Scotland's Martha Thomas (7).

Norway's Frida Maanum also bagged seven and is a strong outside shot to win the Golden Boot. However, attention this summer is likely to fall on three or four players from teams that will be vying to reach the final.

Marie-Antoinette Katoto won the Olympics Golden Boot last summer with five goals from four games. Germany's Lea Schüller bagged three last summer and, while she's had a less-prolific season for Bayern than previous campaigns, she remains her country's biggest goal threat.

Beth Mead, if selected, scored six goals at Euro 2022 and could surpass Inka Grings and Birgit Prinz (10) as the all-time top scorers in the Women's European Championships. However, Arsenal's Alessia Russo is a more realistic Golden Boot contender this summer.

And then there is Spain. who boast a wealth of attacking talent. Mariona Caldentey, Lucia Garcia and the exciting Salma Paralluelo could shine here. Alexia Putellas will lead the European Championship Women 2025 top goalscorer odds if she's fit.

If you're wondering who will win the Golden Boot, be mindful that Spain are more likely to share the wealth among their players, while someone like Schüller could be the focal point for Germany.
