Teen Patti is an immensely popular card game that has roots in India, but has also gained immense popularity overseas. In fact, you can play a few versions of the game here at LeoVegas!
Players of three-card brag or other poker variations may find the game somewhat similar. It’s fast-paced but easy enough to learn, so let’s explore how to play Teen Patti in detail.

What is Teen Patti?
Teen Patti is a card game with roots in South Asia. It’s a three-card game that can include up to six players at once, and the aim is to make the strongest hand possible with your trio.
Like traditional poker, there are card rankings in Teen Patti that are stronger than others. However, the game differs slightly from Western poker in the names of the rankings used, and even in how the gameplay sometimes unfolds.
Rules of Teen Patti
Between three and six players take part according to traditional Teen Patti rules, though there are dealer/player variations in live casino lounges. There’s always a traditional, 52-card deck in play.
Teen Patti card hand rankings are as follows, from strongest to weakest:
- Trail or trio: Where all three cards are the same rank.
- Pure sequence: Where all three cards are in the same suit, and are consecutive.
- Impure sequence: Where three cards are consecutive but different suits.
- Colour: Where all three cards are the same suit, but not consecutive.
- Pair: Where two cards are the same rank.
- High card: Where you cannot play any other hand, and rely on the strength of your highest card.
The stronger your hand is, the more chance you have of beating your opponents.
The game starts with everyone placing an ante bet, before players choose whether to see their cards or play through blind. Then, each player takes turns in a clockwise direction to either raise, call or fold, based on their hands’ strengths. If two players remain, then there may be a showdown, where the strongest hand wins.
Gameplay mechanics
Gameplay continues with betting, raising and folding, until there is a showdown or a winner.
Playing blind also has its advantages here. In traditional Teen Patti, a blind bet must equal a preset, minimum wager. You must bet double that amount if you choose to see your cards!
There are also sideshows in some Teen Patti games, where you can challenge other players to show their hands. This creates a duel, and the player with the lower hand of the two is out of the game.
In the final showdown, if your opponent is playing blind, you’ll have to match the current bet at least four times. For two ‘seeing’ players, meanwhile, the bet is doubled.
Tips for playing Teen Patti
One of the best Teen Patti tips we can offer is to simply start with low stakes. Until you know the game better, refrain from making sideshows and keep your bets low.
As with Western poker, it pays to watch your opponents’ behaviour. Do they have tells? If you think that your opponents are bluffing, you’ll need to have a strong hand of your own.
Finally, knowing when to fold is the best Teen Patti strategy to learn. Chasing wins is never wise – and you never know if a seemingly strong hand might come up against a trail or trio in the showdown.
